CRITICAL INCIDENT DRILL
All Hillsborough County Department of Corrections staff members are required to successfully complete an Adult CPR/First Aid certification course.  Furthermore, they will also be required to maintain this certification during their entire employment with the department.  All CPR/First Aid certifications, that are achieved by staff members, are authorized by the American Red Cross.

Critical Incident Drills were created in an effort to better prepare security personnel in the skills they need to respond to incidents involving the administering of medical care.  Conducting CPR on a "manikin" applying direct pressure to an identified part of the body, etc., in a classroom environment does not truly prepare security staff for what could potentially occur at any given moment.

These drills have proven to assist this department in maintaining the safety of staff, inmates and visitors to the facility.

The Training Division realizes that there is a tremendous difference between completing a proficiency exam in a controlled environment and actually demonstrating learned skills in a more dynamic setting.  Therefore, after all security staff members satisfactorily complete the American Red Cross certification course, they will then be required to successfully complete the Critical Incident Drill portion of the course.

By utilizing role players, weighted "manikins", realistic looking aids (cuts, wounds, etc.) and by having the officers physically respond from different locations within the facility we are able to stress and demonstrate the importance of being trained to respond to any possible situation. The officers are trained to appropriately deal with their increased heart rate, increased adrenaline levels and are trained to enter an area with little knowledge of the situation, be able to receive information quickly and then immediately respond in an effort to maintain the safety of the individuals involved.
